ENGINEERS are hard at work dismantling the historic Victorian conservatory at Wentworth Castle Gardens.
The iron glasshouse - which featured on the BBC’s Restoration programme - will cost £3.74 million to rescue but it is considered one of the best examples of its kind.
It is a rare surviving Victorian glasshouse and in its day was at the forefront of technology, with electric lighting as early as 1886.
Every single piece of the historic structure is being tagged and taken to the Shafton depot of Shepley Engineering to be assessed.
The framework will be built back up on the workshop floor and every piece inspected and assessed to see what work needs to be done.
The work has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, English Heritage, the Country Houses Foundation and the European Regional Development Fund and many local donors.
