Council Plans £300,000 Purchase Of Derelict Flats

MORE than £300,000 has been put aside by the council to buy three derelict flats it once owned so they can be demolished and redeveloped.

Barnsley Council is being forced to submit compulsory purchase orders for the flats on Harriet Close, which were sold to a private investor in 2003, because it can't come to an agreement on price.

Residents on neighbouring Mount Vernon Avenue said the block became rundown soon after it was sold and became a haven for anti-social behaviour.

Negotiations have led to the council already buying back 11 of the flats but three still remain the ownership of absentee landlords, which is stalling the council's plans to flatten them and build six, two bedroom houses in their place.

A council report states it has a budget of £310,000 to buy the remaining flats and wants to demolish all 14 and hand the site over to South Yorkshire Housing Association for work to start.

310k for three flats?? What are they playin at?! I'm sure there are procedures and regulations about landlords who allow properties under their control to fall into a state of disrepair! Just knock them down!!!

if you have that much spare cash then come and cut the grass on our green or is that the money you are saving from cutting it that you are using to buy the flats, how much profit is some one making out of that then.????????????

who bought them from the council, to then have them bought back, and what is the new development..are the same people involved in all the transactions or...

council have this money----but yet CANT FIX HOUSES THERE ALREADY RENTING US--BUT ARE ALWAYS THERE FOR MONEY--then law over bedrooms comes in meaning extra money to pay em--but yet if youve got a repair that needs doing -youve got to pay for certain repairs doing yourself as well-these are getting like private landlords ---THEY ABUSE THE TENANTS-
