Barnsley Parks Voted Best In Country

Monday August 6 2012

THREE of Barnsley's parks have been voted as some of the best in the country.

Cannon Hall Park, Worsbrough Mill Country Park and Elsecar Park have been given the Green Flag Award, ranking them as among the best in the UK.

Elsecar Park has earned the status for the fifth year running, Cannon Hall Park for second year and Worsbrough Mill Country Park receives the flag for the first time.

Coun Linda Burgess said: “Congratulations and thank you to everyone involved for their hard work in achieving this, including staff, volunteers and friends groups. I would encourage the people of Barnsley to visit and enjoy these parks.”

Louise is so right, they live very close to me and you see them both early every morning going down and again later in the day as well and they are both pensioners, I think Richard is in his late seventies and Pat early seventies

Locke park shud get a mention as the biggest dissapoint for a park, its just 1big dog toilet with a eyesore of a cafe, no facilaties tennis courts wrecked & play area is lookin shabby already & not a flower in sight, it used to be beautiful years ago.

Thats because Locke park is council run and elsecar, worsbrough mill and cannon hall are all private. The council wont waste money on it when local residents dont have the respect and im not labeling everyone near there but its not the best area in barnsley.

Elsecar park has something special...don't know what it is but it feels..like an old fashioned stroll in the park..Locke park is wrecked and Cannon Hall is too much business to feel relaxed

Thurnscoe Park and Rose Garden, was donated to the village by the Hickleton Miners welfare group and the Thiornley family( who donated and administrated the land), and was kept by a resident park keeper for a very liong time, who lived within the grounds. However when the Council took over, the keeper was retired and the keepers house was left to crumble, as was the park. the rose garden/dell was filled in and covered over with grass and the gardens were left to run wild. The only work the council do in the garden area is to cut the grass. I and great many others, (not including the local councillors, who obviously couldn't care less) from the village, are very aggrieved at this. Because the park does not make any profit other than to contain the war memorial, the coun cil are not interested. The Park has gates that are lockable but there is no one to lock them. The park is now an eyesore and needs a great deal of renovation. How can a private park be considered for a public award?

Well, a campaign appears to be on the way to get the Locke Park Tower repaired and hopefully open to the public. We are a proud bunch in the Kingstone area and we invite all to support the cause of having the Locke Park Tower repaired. I was talking to a chap only a few weeks ago who said that on a clear day, you could see York Minster... now, I ain't religious, but to see so far would be wonderful... Let's make this park the best in the UK... I am not dragging this council down or bumping it up, but with reductions in all services, it is natural that everything has to be moth-balled. If we ain't got the money coming in, then you cannot invest it... Over to Mr Cameron! CAN WE HAVE SOME MORE MONEY PLEASE! "SUPPORT THE REPAIR OF THE LOCKE PARK TOWER"... I'm in...

Shame the pitch and put at elsecar has been left to nature. Also £3.50 to park at cannon hall opposite the garden centre even for 5 mins. Is there any where more expensive in the borough! Neary as bad as bretton sculpture park.
