£50m Barnsley College Opens Doors To Students

Tuesday September 6 2011

THE new £50m Barnsley College building has opened to students this week with a big celebration.

The project - which was one of only 13 out of 144 nationally to be completed after funding got pulled - was seven years in development and only got finished after Barnsley College head Colin Booth met with past and present prime-ministers  and local MPs to raise Barnsley’s case in the House of Commons.

The £50m, nine-storey building incorporates has atrium providing specially designed study and social spaces, and dedicated personalised learning zones that form the heart of the campus.

On Monday, new students were given a VIP reception, with a Hollywood style red carpet laid out to welcome the building’s first arrivals.

It was the first day of term for over 6,000 students, who were given a taste of the College’s creative talent as College band, The Bam Shoots, performed live outside the building.

Colin Booth added: “Today is a landmark in the history of Barnsley College and the town. This building will provide first-class facilities which can only enhance the learning experience of each and every student; we are one of the best Colleges in the country and we now have a building and facilities to match.”
