Plan To Convert Wombwell Chapels Into Peace Garden

Tuesday June 21 2011

FUNDS are being sought to transform two derelict chapels in Wombwell Cemetery into a peace garden, We Are Barnsley can reveal.
The Friends of Wombwell Cemetery are through to the final application stage of the The Jubilee People’s Millions award scheme - which is a partnership between the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) and ITV that will see 60 awards of up to £60,000 handed out to new projects.
The Friends' project, entitled “Peace from Dereliction” aims to transform the more derelict of two Grade II listed chapels into a peace garden providing a dedicated area for quiet personal contemplation.
As well as making the walls and tower secure, re-laying the floor and erecting a complete set of decorative railings selected shrubs and trees will be introduced and a wall provided for the placing of personal memorials similar to those on the cemetery railings - there is already considerable interest in this idea.
A spokesman said: "The next move involves an appearance on ITV and a telephone voting competition when the Friends rely on their many supporters to ring in as many times as they possibly can on a special low-cost number which will be released for the first time on the morning of the screening.
"From Monday, 27 June please look out for The Friends of Wombwell Cemetery appearing on an ITV news programme and do the necessary. The phone number will be released for the first time only on the morning of the broadcast but every effort will be made to get it broadcast by local papers, radio and television stations during that day."
