Taxi Marshal Scheme Returns To Barnsley

THE POPULAR taxi marshals who helped keep order in the town’s taxi ranks over Christmas and New Year will be returning to Barnsley this weekend.

Taxi marshals will be operating on the New Street and Midland Street ranks this Saturday (28 January) to help Barnsley Mardi Gras revellers get home safely.

At Christmas and New Year they helped keep order in taxi queues by dealing with any altercations and creating an orderly line for the drivers.

The arrangement worked so well that hackney cabs refused to pick up at unauthorised ranks elsewhere in the town centre – from where the waiting public were directed to the Midland Street rank.

Coun Charles Wraith, chairman of the General Licensing Board, said: “We had feedback from members of the public that the taxi marshal service was very much appreciated over Christmas and New Year so I’m pleased that funding has been secured for them to attend the Mardi Gras event.

“I hope that it will encourage more people to have a great night out and a safe journey home.”

This should be paid for by extra contributions from the bars & clubs, not from council running costs.

i would like to be able  to think this could be a regular thing even at bank holidays thank you to the council

Another good idea would be for the marshalls to ask people in the queue if they want to share a cab if going in the same direction. This would reduce the queues and save passengers money.

    Too dangerous.

    Why is it dangerous?

Strangers in a taxi together, probably at least a bit drunk – assault, sexual assault, theft, possibly worse.
