A free newspaper for dads and dads to be is being launched in Barnsley this week to help promote the benefits of breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding rates in the borough are six per cent lower than the national average of 69.9 per cent and the newspaper is just one of the ways being used by the NHS in Barnsley to encourage more new mums to give their baby “the best start to life”.
The newspaper, known as ‘The Be a Star’, includes real life stories about local families’ breastfeeding journeys, tips for dads who want to get involved, general information and details for where to go for more information and support.
Kay Bennett, breastfeeding co-ordinator for NHS Barnsley, said: “Dads can play a really important role in the decision about whether to breastfeed, which is why we want them to feel as involved as possible. Encouraging more mums to breastfeed is important not only for their baby’s health but also their own as it helps prevent certain types of cancer and weak bones later in life.”
The papers will be available in community settings and at Barnsley Hospital.
