LEARNING Disability Week takes place between Monday 21 and Sunday 27 June.
The theme this year is “Getting it Right”. “Getting it Right” is looking at addressing the inequalities people with learning disabilities often face.
The Barnsley Integrated Learning Disability Service in association with Mencap and Sportactiv is hosting an Active Health Fun Day on Friday 25 June. The activities, for people with learning disabilities, will be held at the Rugby Club, Shaw Lane, Barnsley at 10am to 3pm.
People with learning disabilities will be attending from Barnsley, Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster.
The aim of the day is to promote the benefits of undertaking exercise. This will include people with learning disabilities, their families and carers participating in activities and will support ‘inclusion’, a key principle in “Valuing People Now”.
The aim is to introduce service users to new activities and, for them to be supported either by their family members or support staff to participate in the events that have been planned.
There is also a “market place” with stalls giving information about dental services, seeability, health trainers, memory services, PALS, Barnsley hospital staff, and lots more.
The day will start at 10am with Dorothy Hyman, Olympic medallist opening the events and will include activities organised by Sportactiv, Boccia - a game like bowls for people with disabilities, Hula Fit, Five a side Football, Cone Conut Shy (target game), Tri-golf, Kwik Cricket and Athletics. The activities will run 10am to12 noon.
People can purchase food from a limited menu from the bar; there will also be a seating area for people to bring their own packed lunches. After lunch the Mayor Cllr Margaret Sheard will open the Team events at 1pm. The teams will be of 6 people and consist of people with learning disabilities and their supporters. The Mayor will present the trophies to the winners at 2.15pm.
