£5 Million Boost for Transport in South Yorkshire

BARNSLEY is to get a share of a £5m government pot that will help provide sustainable transport in town.
The cash – from the Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) – will be spent on a range of projects across South Yorkshire.
Coun Tim Cheetham said: “It will fund new job-connector bus services which will allow our people to access job opportunities. It will allow new walking and cycling routes to be built and will fund the innovative Wheels to Work project, which can provide scooters for people who want to get to work, but cannot access public transport.
“There will also be a significant drive to help people change their travel behaviour and take advantage of the more sustainable modes of travel which are available to them.”
Barnsley Council and its South Yorkshire partners have also submitted a further bid for £32 million to provide funding for larger projects – like Barnsley’s safe walking and cycling routes to the borough’s new advanced learning centres, and a park-and-ride car park at Elsecar rail station.
A decision is expected in about a month.
Barnsley’s Cabinet spokesperson for Development, Environment and Culture (Operations), Cllr Roy Miller, was also strongly supportive of the further bid for monies.

He added: “We hope that the government’s enthusiasm for our £5m bid will bode well for further success later in the year. I’d like to thank the officers of the four South Yorkshire councils and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, who have put in an enormous amount of effort to deliver this success.”
